Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) is the international day of remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust and of other Genocides around the world, throughout the ages. On HMD we commemorate victims, honour survivors and commit to tackling prejudice, discrimination and racism in the present day. We encourage nations to conquer genocide and individuals to stand up against hatred.
HMD is marked each year on 27th January
- the anniversary of the Liberation of nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.
HMD sets out to motivate people to make sure that the horrendous crimes committed during the Holocaust, -before and since are neither forgotten nor repeated.
27th January 2010 – Holocaust Memorial Day – marks the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. On this day, the Holocaust Memorial Trust challenges everyone across the U.K. to become a part of a Legacy of Hope. Every year, on 27th January, we pause to reflect on what can happen when prejudice, racism and exclusionary behaviour are left unchecked.
In 2005, the United Nations officially declared 27th January as Holocaust Memorial Day worldwide and we invite you to commemorate the day with us in 2010.

OXFORDSHIRE SCEPTICS IN THE PUB

Homeopathic overdose

campaign

Following the advert for ” Simon Singh to  be at WINCHESTER SKEPTICS IN THE PUB” [see posting of 10/01/10 on this website], one of our members has e-mailed to inform us of  related campaigns in our area. This is good networking. Keep BH informed. We would paticularly like a brief report of any event of interest that you have attended and better still a photo by e-mail.

Please also note the website of Oxfordshire Sceptics in the pub

Hi David,

Thanks for the email. Not sure if you’re aware, but Oxford’s Sceptics In The Pub are doing the same thing on 30 January, which I’m planning on attending. The details from their email is as follows: -

As some of you may be aware, the 10:23 campaign is running to try and stop boots selling homeopathic remedies in their pharmacy section. You can read more about the campaign here: http://www.1023.org.uk/ [co-ordinated by the Mersey Skeptics: http://www.merseysideskeptics.org.uk/] On Saturday 30th of January, there is going to be a nationwide homeopathic overdose in support of this campaign. Skeptics from all over Britain are gathering in their towns to swallow a whole tube of a Boots 30C homeopathic remedy, in defiance of the instructions on the label. All the swallowers will be clad in natty 10:23 t-shirts, and the press will be invited – it’s going to be a very public event! This is the first ever event of this kind and size in Britain! I’m co-ordinating the Oxford event. The aim is to get 30 “swallowers” to meet me in Oxford city-centre at 9.45 on Saturday 30th. We’ll be taking the “medicine” at 10:23am. Obviously, the swallowers will be at no risk – this is kind of the point. In addition, if you’re not ready to swallow, I’m also looking for followers to hand out leaflets and cheer on our swallowers! It’d be great if you could email back and let me know if you’d like to be involved! I had a lot of interest at the last skeptics meeting but still need more volunteers. It’s going to be great fun, and afterwards we’re going to the pub to watch videos roll in from around the country.

Thanks, Rosie Olliver rosie.olliver@city-centre.net 10:23 .

I’m not trying to divert attention or attendance from the efforts of Crispian et al, of course, but Oxford is unarguably an easier hop than Soton for most of us.

 :) Regards, Matt

Sunday 31 January, 6.0 pm, St Andrew’s Church, Linton Road, Oxford (off Banbury Road)

A public debate on Assisted Dying

Evan Harris MP will be putting the case for a change in the law.  He will be opposed by Dr Peter Saunders, Director of Care not Killing and Gen Secretary of the Christian Medical Fellowship.

All are welcome and, given the venue, I expect Evan would be glad of a bit of support.

TED Best of the WEB

Posted by: David McKnight | Comments (0)

Have you found TED yet? What does T E D  mean? Best just to visit. It just got even better.

Dear Global TED Community,
Over the past couple weeks, we’ve been introducing a significant new feature on TED.com.
It’s called “Best of the Web”.  Essentially we have begun linking to the best talks out there that were NOT recorded at a TED event.
Today, for example, to celebrate Martin Luther King Day, we are posting his world-changing “I have a dream” speech given back in 1963. No matter how many times you may have seen it, it always inspires and provokes. And we’re proud to have a page dedicated to it, to facilitate a conversation around the searing issues he raises, all still so relevant today.
You can see a few other early selections here (in the ‘Show by Event’ selector on the left, scroll down to the bottom to “Best of the Beb”), including:
Steve Jobs: How to Live Before You Die
Michael Sandel: What is the Right Thing to Do?
Robert Sapolsky: The Uniqueness of Humans
Edwidge Danticat: Stories of Haiti
…and the famous “last lecture” of Randy Pausch
As you can see, every Best of the Web talk gets its own page on TED.com, complete with all the tools that accompany TEDTalks: our unique qualitative ratings, recommendations for similar or relevant talks, information about the speakers, and ways to quickly share the talk with your social network. Most importantly, each will have its own commenting section, so you can discuss these talks within the TED community.
Over the coming months you’ll see this collection grow into something truly special…  a one-stop portal to the very best talks on the Internet. Indeed we’d like your help identifying the talks you consider most significant.  Simply email contact@ted.com with “Best of the Web suggestion” in the subject line, and a link to where the talk can be seen.
Note: The Best of the Web talks will not interrupt or diminish the daily flow of TEDTalks.  With the success of TEDx and growing numbers of remarkable partner events, the quality of these releases continues to rise. Indeed we have some exciting news to announce tomorrow.
Thank you for your participation in creating an ever more wide-reaching conversation around the world’s most fascinating and important topics.
Best,
Chris Anderson, TED Curator
