In my opinion it's a good thing to donate own organs after death. And so a piece of oneself gets a second life too. ;-)

I completely support the donation of organs, have been on the Donor Register since arriving in the UK (and all my adult life while living in Australia), and go so far as to support both two things that would be extremely useful in this regard:

* Assumption of consent, i.e. everyone is a donor unless they explicitly request otherwise. Still allows for religious or other objections, but puts the focus on preservation of life rather than desperate searches for available tissue.
* Integration of donor consent into the driving licence (e.g. a red circle with ORGAN DONOR clearly market), as more people carry their licence than the flimsy donor card.

As an aside, I recently started a thread on the BHA website (BHA members see http://tinyurl.com/yhze5yc) asking for the centralisation of all of this kind of information -- organ donation, body donation, living wills/DNRs, humanist ceremonies, etc -- so perhaps we can get some momentum going here?

Donating my body to science seems like a great plan. For those of us in Berkshire, I think the nearest university to which we can donate our body is Oxford.

The Human Tissue Authority has all the info on how to go about doing it:
